Pedestal Information

MeadowWood pedestals and wall wedges are individually designed and built for each specific piece of sculpture or collectible object. Each furniture grade pedestal is constructed in consultation with the collector, designer and or architect to determine the forms, features, dimensions and custom finishes that are required for a specific display. Pedestals can be table top or floor installations. Wall wedges are displays that mount on vertical surfaces.

Forms: Include elliptical, circular and rectilinear as well as more complex shapes. I have substantial experience with the lofting of sailing yachts and can apply this to the development of complex compound curved objects.

Features: Such as rotation and or lighting of the object can be built into the pedestal. The rotation can be in the top of the pedestal where only the object rotates. Alternatively the rotation can be at the bottom of the pedestal where the object and the pedestal rotate together. This feature is well suited to larger works. Objects can be bottom lit or in some cases top lit. Bottom lighting can be combined with a top insert rotator to provide striking presentation of transparent and translucent objects. For sculpture with decoration on the bottom, a clear top combined with a recessed mirror allows viewing the bottom without the need to handle the piece.

Dimensions: Are determined to support the object appropriately and to position it for best viewing.

Finishes: There are few limits to the finishes possible. I use water based finishes in an effort to produce a more eco friendly product and have virtually no solvent waste associated with the shop. From native to exotic hardwoods the natural color pallet is wide ranging.

  • Clear coating brings out the inherent beauty of these materials.
  • On natural wood I work with a variety of water based dyes and stains from both the U.S. and Europe that can create a wide spectrum of effects from enhanced wood tones to vibrant or subdued colors.
  • Waterborne opaque lacquers can be tinted to match virtually any house paint color. These can be used to tie a pedestal into existing decor.
  • Milk paint is a traditional early finish that allows lovely nuanceing of color in the finish itself. Milk paint, when built up in layers of color, can reproduce finishes with the look of age and use.
